Making, Contesting and Navigating Space: Between Religion, Indigenous Knowledge and Politics

The designation of “religious” space is a contested one. Material structures may be declared churches, mosques, shrines, or temples but the processes that lead up to that point are politically loaded and complex. The explication as religious space can depend on national or communal laws, social norms and perceptions as well as the strategies applied by the actors themselves. The same complexity applies to the practices. Especially in the realm of traditional practices, “religious” is quite often found too narrow a designation for the types of knowledge which traditional practitioners produce. In the workshop, we want to analyse precisely the processes that make, contest, and navigate space as “religious,” “ontological,” “political,” “public,” etc. We want to pay attention to the indigenous spatial ontologies and the global-local interactions relevant to these formations of space.

Die Bezeichnung als „religiöser“ Raum ist umstritten. Materielle Strukturen können zu Kirchen, Moscheen, Schreinen oder Tempeln erklärt werden, aber die Prozesse, die zu diesem Punkt führen, sind politisch aufgeladen und komplex. Die Ausweisung als religiöser Raum kann von nationalen oder kommunalen Gesetzen, sozialen Normen und Wahrnehmungen sowie von den Strategien der Akteure selbst abhängen. Die gleiche Komplexität gilt für Praktiken. Vor allem im Bereich der traditionellen Praktiken wird der Begriff „religiös“ oft als zu eng befunden für die Arten von Wissen, die traditionelle Praktizierende hervorbringen. In dem Workshop wollen wir genau die Prozesse analysieren, die den Raum als „religiös“, „ontologisch“, „politisch“, „öffentlich“ usw. gestalten, anfechten und navigieren. Wir wollen die Aufmerksamkeit auf die indigenen räumlichen Ontologien und die global-lokalen Interaktionen richten, die für diese Formationen des Raums relevant sind.
