The Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence - Reconfiguring African Studies

The Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence is a major transcontinental and multidisciplinary research undertaking aiming to reconfigure African Studies. As such the Cluster has funded a total of 74 research projects run by its members at its five locations. Building on decades of internationally outstanding research in African studies at University of Bayreuth, the cluster will develop new approaches to the analysis of African and African diasporic lifeworlds through the lens of multiplicity.

Research Projects / Sections

The Cluster has funded a total of 74 research projects run by its members at its five locations. The Cluster projects are subordinate to the six Research Sections: Affiliations, Arts/Aestethics, Mobilities, Moralities, Knowledges and Learning.

Publications

The members of the Cluster of Excellence have published a variety of monographs, articles and edited books.

Knowledge Lab / Working Formats

Located at the centre of its research activities, the Knowledge Lab interlinks the Africa Multiple Cluster’s three main research structures: the African Cluster Centres, the Bayreuth Academy, and the Research Sections.

Junior Research Groups

The Cluster has established four independent Junior Research Groups (JRG), each consisting of three members: one postdoctoral scholar, as group leader, and two doctoral students, recruited and supervised by the postdoctoral group leader, to work on a joint project for a four-year funding period.

Fellows

The Bayreuth Academy hosts international fellows at different career stages from all over the globe, being particularly open to Africa-based scholars

PostDoc Working Groups

The Bayreuth Academy promotes working formats for postdoctoral academics based at the University of Bayreuth to convene international and interdisciplinary Working Groups.

Early Career / BIGSAS

The portfolio Early Career & Equal Opportunity, EC & EO, focuses on the support of early career scholars in academic and administrative matters and helps doctoral and postdoctoral fellows to navigate the complex aspects of professional development with a perspective on individual career progression.
