VAD Conference: Reconfigurations in Africa - and in African Studies

Call for Panels

Bayreuth, 30 September - 05 October 2024

Rationale:

A range of global processes deserve urgent attention, from climate crisis, to war and pandemics, to the challenges democracies are facing. The upcoming VAD conference seeks to understand such processes by thinking through and with African perspectives. Thus, we – African and European academics, activists, politicians, artists etc., coming together for this conference – will address issues of reflexivity, relationality and multiplicity, taking into account the situatedness of knowledge and knowledge production.

Given this global constellation, Africa-related institutions outside Africa, including museums, universities and associations, have recently come under pressure to reconfigure their structures, ideologies and representations. African studies, for example, have worked to find new ways of collaborating across disciplines and places. However, there is a need to review what has been achieved or overlooked.

To address such omissions and decentring the European perspective, this conference will focus on recent changes in African universities and other institutions, including their challenges, contestations, and reforms. From a perspective that focuses African experiences in dealing with pandemics, climate crises, and wars, we hope to newly understand and to critically analyse these current global processes.

The streams of this conference foreground recent and historical changes on the African continent and their global academic reverberations. African Studies have the capacity to account for the situatedness of knowledge production and dissemination. With that in mind, the VAD conference continues this critical and multi-disciplinary discussion to foster collaboration and intellectual exchange.

Therefore, we suggest the following streams:

1. Location-based African Studies: Discrepancies and Debates

What do African Studies look like from different location-based perspectives? Given the historical anchoring of African Studies disciplines in the Global North, this stream provides a platform to discuss interlinked perspectives on African Studies with a focus on their African situatedness. Do African Studies provide “distinct perspectives” in different local contexts, for example in German speaking countries?

2. Perspectives on current crises

This stream invites contributions on global processes defined as crises such as migration; health and pandemics; climate change; war; terrorism; land-rights; debt; disinformation campaigns and their effects on social cohesion; race-, class-, gender- and sexuality-based persecution; budget cuts in education; attacks on constitutional integrity and the ways they are relevant for African Studies. Who are the experts defining crises and how does their expertise influence how crises are dealt with?

3. Imagining ‘Africanness’

2024 marks the final year of the UN International Decade for People of African Descent. The conveners invite research dealing with the self-understanding of different individuals and groups in Africa and its diaspora and their (historical and recent) interrelations and mutual perceptions. This includes what it means and has meant to be ‘other’ in African contexts, as informed by (but not limited to) queer and intersectional studies.

4. Political Economy of Extractivism

Recurrent increases of debt, the post-colonial scramble for Africa’s rare earths and green hydrogen (also in the quest for energy transition) render the analysis of African economies and their relation to global capitalism ever more urgent. This stream invites empirical and conceptual panels that explore lingering and new dependencies, as well as African responses to these.

5. Social media, archiving and ‘the digital’

The digital sphere provides new avenues for communicating in and about Africa. Scholars, artists, and activists are increasingly taking advantage of the digital to collaborate, collect information, and to combine, visualise and archive different forms of content. This stream seeks to provide a forum for discussing case studies, future opportunities, and constraints as they relate to digitization processes.

6. New forms of collaboration in African arts

Recent cultural productions from Africa are enjoying an unprecedented level of attention across the globe. Literature, music, dance, and the fine arts in physical and digital forms are appreciated everywhere from Seoul to Bayreuth. This stream invites studies on art worlds reflecting these new developments.

7. Ecology and planetary consciousness

Planetary consciousness is considered a relevant continuation and enhancement of globalisation studies that surpasses narrow national frameworks. This stream invites proposals on the more-than-human and relationships between organisms and their environment. What social, political, spiritual, and economic implications do these wider perspectives have for questions such as food scarcity, pollution, population growth, and related technological interventions?

Exzellenzcluster „Contestations of the Liberal Script” (SCRIPTS)

Wissenschaftliche*r Mitarbeiter*in (m/w/d) mit vorauss. Vollzeit - E 13 TV-L HU (Drittmittelfinanzierung befristet bis 31.12.2025)

Der Exzellenzcluster „Contestations of the Liberal Script” (SCRIPTS) untersucht die gegenwärtigen Auseinandersetzungen um das Modell der liberalen Demokratie und Marktwirtschaft aus historischer, globaler und vergleichender Perspektive. Es verbindet die in Berlin vorhandene Expertise in den Sozialwissenschaften und Regionalstudien und arbeitet mit Forschungseinrichtungen in allen Weltregionen und Praxisinstitutionen aus Politik, Kultur und Gesellschaft zusammen (http://www.scripts-berlin.eu). Die Forschung des Clusters ist in vier Research Units (Rus) organisiert: Borders, Orders, (Re-) Allocation und Temporality. Die RU (Re-) Allocation untersucht Auseinandersetzungen um das liberale Skript im Hinblick auf die Verteilung von Ressourcen.

Aufgabengebiet:

• Wiss. Dienstleistungen in der Forschung im Exzellenzcluster „Contestations of the Liberal Script“ (SCRIPTS), insb. Bearbeitung eines eigenen interdisziplinären Forschungsprojektes zum Themenbereich der RU (ein regionaler Fokus auf Afrika wäre wünschenswert)
•  Entwicklung von Theorien und Konzepten zu Contestations of the Liberal Script auf Basis der systematischen Analyse der Projektergebnisse der RU (Re-) Allocation und der Zusammenarbeit mit Postdoktoranden der anderen RUs und des Theory Networks
• Verbreitung wiss. Ergebnisse durch die Erstellung von Publikationen sowie die Teilnahme an Workshops und Konferenzen
• inhaltliche Vorbereitung, Planung und Co-Leitung von regelmäßigen Meetings und Workshops der RU (Re-) Allocation
• Mitarbeit am Fortsetzungsantrag des Clusters

Anforderungen: 

• Abgeschlossenes wiss. Hochschulstudium und für den Cluster einschlägige Promotion im Bereich der Sozialwissenschaften, Geschichte oder Area Studies
• Erwünscht sind, hervorragende Fachkenntnisse zum Forschungsgegenstand des Clusters, sehr gute theoretische und methodische Kenntnisse in den Sozialwissenschaften und/oder Regionalstudien mit Bezug zur RU (Re-) Allocation
• sehr gute Englisch- und Französischkenntnisse
• Forschungserfahrungen in Afrika oder einer anderen außereuropäischen Region sowie Erfahrungen in der Koordination wiss. Arbeitsgruppen sind von Vorteil.

The Cluster of Excellence „Contestations of the Liberal Script” (SCRIPTS) analyzes the contemporary controversies about the liberal order from a historical, global and comparative perspective. It connects the academic expertise in the social sciences and area studies in Berlin, collaborates with research institutions in all world regions and maintains cooperative ties with major political, cultural and social institutions (http://www.scripts- berlin.eu). The Cluster’s research programme is structured around four Research Units (RUs): Borders, Orders, (Re-)Allocation and Temporality. The RU (Re-)Allocation investigates contestations of the liberal script with regard to the distribution of resources.

Job description:

• Scientific services in research within the Cluster of Excellence “Contestations of the Liberal Script” (SCRIPTS), esp. exploring innovative research perspectives in the context of the RU (Re-)Allocation that bridge the gap between prevailing epistemological and empirical approaches in the social sciences and area studies
• research on an individual research project within the thematic framework of the RU (a regional focus on Africa is desirable)
• theorizing Contestations of the Liberal Script based on the systematic and comprehensive analysis of the RU (Re-)Allocation’s results and by collaborating with postdoctoral fellows of the other Research Units and of the Theory Network
• disseminating research results through publications, workshops and conferences
• preparing, planning and co-directing the RU (Re-)Allocation’s regular meetings and workshops
• preparing material and reports for the renewal proposal of the Cluster

Requirements:

• Completed university degree as well as PhD in social sciences, history and/or area studies relating to the RU (Re-)Allocation, very good English and French skills
• research experience in Africa or in another non-European world region as well as experience with coordinating research groups is an asset

Audio Transcription Assistant

“Multilingual African Learning Spaces: Translanguaging in Kenyan Schools"

The project on “Multilingual African Learning Spaces: Translanguaging in Kenyan Schools” within the Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence at the University of Bayreuth is looking for two (2) Audio Transcription Assistants to transcribe audio recordings into text using the MAXQDA software. On-the-job training will be offered to applicants without prior experience with MAXQDA.

The two (2) assistants will work closely with other project members in the working space provided on the university premises. Thus, the ideal candidates should be students who are based at the University of Bayreuth or those willing to be physically available at the university at least twice a week for progress reports.

Responsibilities:

• Transcribe audio recordings into text documents using MAXQDA software
• Ensure accuracy and clarity of all transcriptions
• Troubleshoot any issues that may arise when using MAXQDA software

Requirements:

• Knowledge of MAXQDA software or willing to learn it quickly and efficiently
• Excellent command of English and Kiswahili. Knowledge of any Luhya or Kalenjin dialect is an added advantage
• Ability to work quickly and accurately
• Good organizational and time management skills
• Proven experience as an audio transcription assistant is an added advantage

This job will pay a rate of 0.50€ per minute of writing, which means if you write for 60mins you get 30€. The payment will be done by calculating minutes of writing. We have around 2000-3000 minutes of audio.
