Muslims and Christians – for a better development of Africa?
On the role of religion in development cooperation
Until the 1990s religion was considered a hindrance for secular development work. Since the start of the millennium possible positive impulses contributed by religious actors and world views have been discussed intensively. With a focus on a value based development collaboration and a strategy explicitly catering to religion and values the Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Etnwicklung (BMZ) has promoted this discussion internationally. However, who and what are these religious actors? Can they have a positive impact on development and if so, how? Which contributions are expected of them and what kind of contribution are they willing to give? Should religious groups in developing countries be funded by taxes? And what about (religious) values seemingly irreconcilable with sustainable development?
The „Weingartener Afrikagespräche 2019“ present current debates on the role of religious ideas, practices and actors in the development collaboration. Together with representatives from science, politics and development goals, use and problems of a value based development cooperation will be discussed and modes of operation of religious organizations on the African continent will be presented.
