WELCOME TO VAD2024

The Institute of African Studies at the University of Bayreuth will be hosting the biennial conference of the Association for African Studies in Germany e.V. (VAD) from 30 September - 02 October, 2024

The VAD is a union of scholars from various disciplines within African Studies and meets during international conferences, where current issues in Africa research are addressed in workshops and panel discussions.

The 2024 conference theme is  Reconfigurations in Africa - and in African Studies, addressing current and past crises and processes of transformation on the African continent, as well as the need to critically reflect on the means — academic, artistic and otherwise – by which we approach them globally to expand knowledge production. To this point VAD2024 aims to bring Africa-related institutions outside of Africa, including museums, universities and associations, into conversation with parallel institutions in Africa. https://nomadit.co.uk/vad/vad2024/cfpan.phtml

VAD2024 will be held in a hybrid format to enable wide participation. Seven unique streams invite academics, activists, politicians, and artists to explore these themes from inter- and transdisciplinary perspectives. https://nomadit.co.uk/vad/vad2024/cfpan.phtml#streams

VAD2024 working language is English. If the panel or workshop is held in another language, then we ask the convenors to mediate translations and also let us know the language of the panel, so we can add this to panel description. Conference organisers are not able to arrange simultaneous translation at the conference.

STANDARD REGISTRATION IS STILL OPEN

All participants - panel convenors, authors, chairs, discussants, organisers, keynotes, plenary speakers, guests, volunteers, committee members and those without any specific role - must register in advance of the event, whether attending in Bayreuth face-to-face (f2f) or online.

Registration is by online form only and does not require instant payment: your registration will be manually processed and within a few days you will be emailed an invoice with payment information. Invoices should be settled within 15 days by card online or by bank transfer.

The deadline for registration for online participation is 2 weeks before the conference start: thereafter it will not be possible to register for online attendance.

Please note that accommodation is not included with the registration fee. You can have a look to our accommodation information page, we advise you organise this in good time as the conference is happening during peak tourist season.
