Seko Shamte is a producer and filmmaker, who is tirelessly working to put Tanzanian cinema on the map. Shamte has been a ‘mover and shaker’ in the Tanzanian media industry for over 15 years. After studying Finance and Media at Marymount Manhattan College in New York, she worked as Head of Programming at East Africa Television before forming her own production company Alkemist Media in 2008. The company produced content for CNN’s Inside Africa and later she produced Mkwawa, a feature documentary on Chief Mkwawa of Uhehe in 2011. A few years ago, she debuted her first feature film, Homecoming, a coming of age story, which explores Tanzanian identity and values. Her most recent film “Binti” (“daughter”, “young woman”) has secured a cinematic spotlight at home, abroad and now on global streaming platform, Netflix. The movie tells the story of four women with very different careers, desires and social backgrounds in Dar es Salaam. The film slowly and intricately interweaves their respective perspectives. The all-women team consisting of Seko Shamte and the producers Angela and Ailinda Rhinda have created one of the few movies that shows a kaleidoscope of women’s lives in East Africa. In 2021, Shamte joined the Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence for the film festival Cinema Africa, where she presented her film “Binti”.
