Brief Description
Billian K. Otundo is a postdoctoral researcher at the Cluster of Excellence Africa Multiple, University of Bayreuth in Germany and is pursuing a habilitation at the Department of English Linguistics at the same university. See Team English Linguistics where she offers courses to post- and undergraduate students. She attained her doctorate as a BIGSAS fellow, where her doctoral dissertation (Otundo 2018) focused on ethnically-marked varieties of Kenyan English(es). Her habilitation project is on multilingual African learning spaces with attention to translanguaging. You can find details of her research here. At the Cluster of Excellence, she is also a co-convener and organiser of a postdoctoral working group, and her research explores the linguistic realities in Kenya’s digital innovations. Further, she is engaged in an ongoing collaboration project on intonation in Kenyan English and Kiswahili at the Phonetic Laboratory at the University of Cologne, Germany. In her research endeavours, she has engaged a mix of quantitative and qualitative data and is experienced in analysis with SPSS, R-Programming, Praat, and MAXQDA among others.
Otundo is well-networked internationally through numerous conference visits in European and African countries and has also engaged in joint projects, like with the University of Bayreuth on code-switching in the speech activity of advice analysing radio phone-in programmes in Kenya and Cameroon (Otundo & Mühleisen 2022). Another joint research is within the decolonisation of higher education in Africa where she reflects together with a colleague at Collège Montmorency in Canada, on the paradoxes around the imaginations of the African reader-writer who uses borrowed ex-colonial European languages (Otundo & Dodonou 2021). On education matters, she has also recently addressed the barriers to implementing the Education Article of the United Nations Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities in Kenya (Otundo 2022), and co-authored on the significance of incorporating toponyms in the university linguistics curriculum as a practical way of doing epistemological decolonisation of education in Africa (Otundo & Doumbia 2023)
