Personal Information
Dr. Anke Schürer-Ries holds a PhD in Photographic History from the Photographic History Research Centre at the University of De Montfort, a M.A. (2:1) in African Studies from the University of Basel, Switzerland, and a B.A. (2:1) in History and Anthropology from the University of Basel, Switzerland. She is also a qualified archivist specialised in historical maps and photographs. She has extensive experience in working with digital and analogue archives, with a focus on international metadata standards and schemata, digital expansion and long-term project management in archives.
Dr. Schürer-Ries’s research interests focus on photographic history in Africa and on the interplay between analogue and digital archives. She is particularly interested in photographic collections and how digital development, the internet and data management systems influence how information and knowledge is perceived, extracted, utilised and disseminated through images.
Dr Schürer-Ries is currently a data curator at the Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence with a focus on content-related data management of current research projects within the Cluster and digital collections management of historical research collections under the auspices of the Institute of African Studies (IAS) at the University of Bayreuth.
