Prof Dr Joël Glasman receives the Research Prize of the Foundation of the French Red Cross. The prize donors are honouring his work on humanitarian aid within the Institute of African Studies (IAS) and the ‘Africa Multiple’ Cluster of Excellence at the University of Bayreuth.
Prof Dr Joël Glasman is Professor of African History at the University of Bayreuth and Principal Investigator of the Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence. His research focusses on the contemporary history of West Africa, colonial history and humanitarian aid. The prize was presented to him in November by historian Anne Rasmussen, Director of Studies at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS) and member of the Board of Directors of the French Red Cross Foundation. The Foundation thus honours Glasman's historical research on humanitarianism, government and humanitarian knowledge as well as his plea for the use of the humanities and social sciences by practitioners in international aid systems. His most recent publication is Petit manuel d'autodéfense à l'usage des volontaires : Les humanités humanitaires (Humanitarian humanities. Critical handbook for humanitarian aid).
The French Red Cross Foundation is a research foundation dedicated to humanitarian and social work. Through it, the French Red Cross aims to promote scientific knowledge, ethical reflection and social innovation in order to advance work in the service of the most vulnerable. The French Red Cross Foundation Research Prize is intended to recognise scientific work already completed or innovative thinking that addresses humanitarian and social problems in both the North and the South.
